Innsbruck’s Nordkette. An exhibition in the city
20 June to 13 October 2002

In the face of continuous change, the equilibrium of the environment is becoming increasingly delicate. As a cultural landscape, the Alpine Space is heavily used and is shaped by human hand. The goal of the International Year of Mountains proclaimed by the United Nations for 2002 is awareness-building for the special situation of the mountain regions.

In this context the Alpenverein Museum in Innsbruck has created a project that addresses the subject of interaction between the town and the mountains. Intensive utilisation of the Nordkette with its resources and leisure potential shapes both the landscape and life in the city. This striking mountain massif with its simultaneous presence in the townscape is the focus of the vertical project. The exhibition is designed to guide the eye from the public urban space to the mountain chain and the details of the landscape. The mountains form an ideal and real backcloth to illustrate various alternatives for and phases in the development of alpine landscapes. The Nordkette is a striking hallmark of the city and at the same time a key element in the identity of the people who live there.

A number of stops have been selected as viewing points for the Nordkette. They form a walk along the Inn promenade on Herzog-Otto-Ufer as far as the English Garden (opposite Congress Innsbruck).

That is the location of the vertical exhibition pavilion.

This symbol is to be seen throughout the exhibition. It indicates a free radio information service that can be accessed by mobile.

A fully illustrated paperback guide to the exhibition and to walking on the Nordkette is available from Innsbruck-Info and the Alpenverein Museum, as well as bookshops and kiosks. The price is € 4.

All texts and the radio information service are available in English.
